Campaigns Archive

Here's a selection of our previous campaigns throughout the years!

Fit to Sit?
If you sit an exam or submit a piece of coursework, you’re deeming yourself fit to be assessed. Once you’ve been marked and you have achieved a pass, your results can’t be changed.

If something in your personal life is affecting your ability to study or complete assessment, you could be eligible for Exceptional Circumstances.

Are Ye Well?
At this time of year it’s easy to feel the pressure of exams, deadlines and late nights in the library.

So, we’ve organised lots of events 9-24 May - Music Mood Rooms, Cuppas in the McClay Library, a Healing Room, Coffee Mornings in the Graduate School, a Disabled Students' Network get together and an Open Mic Night!

Pop-Up SU

We’re heading out and about campus to tell you what we've done this year and to ask what we should be working on!

Our Student Officers, Part-Time Student Officers and Staff will be there, so make sure to come say hi...

Disabled Students' Network

This is the first time that a group has been created for disabled people to come together informally.

Come along, have a chat, play some games and get to know one another!

Student Jobs Survey

We care about your rights and conditions at work, and we’d like to know more about how you are treated as a student worker.

Fill in our Student Jobs Survey and be in with the chance of winning £50 Amazon Voucher.

RAG & SHAG

This year we are combining two of the most iconic student weeks!

RAG & SHAG week is about discussing all things sexy, whilst raising some money for our RAG charities.

Are Ye Well?
At this time of year it’s easy to feel the pressure of exams, deadlines and late nights in the library.

So, we’ve organised a music mood room plus free cuppas in the library to help you de-stress!

International Buddy Scheme
We know how hard it must be for International Students to leave their family, friends and home country to come to a completely new place – one where they mightn’t have even visited before or know anyone. We want to make these students feel welcomed, as at home and as settled as possible in their new community at Queen’s - so we’ve set up the International Buddy Scheme!

Disable The Label
1 in 10 students at Queen's have a disability - virtually all of us will know someone with a disability (visible or invisible).

Our Disable the Label campaign aims to raise awareness about the breadth of disability, challenge perceptions people have about disabilities and reinforce that labels are NOT for people.

Think Out Loud
Research from the National Union of Students (NUS) shows that 20% of students experience mental health difficulties while at university. We want to let our students know that they are not alone and that there is support out there if they need it. Think Out Loud is a week of events dedicated to raising awareness of mental health issues.

Consent is BAE
1 in 7 students have experienced a serious physical or sexual assault during their time at University (NUS Hidden Marks Research Report).

In response to this shocking statistic, we have launched our Consent is BAE campaign to create a healthy understanding of consent amongst our students.

QUBSU Accommodation Forum
We know that it is often hard to find other Queen's students to live with in the new term, especially if you are a new student coming to Queen's.

So, we launched QUBSU Accommodation Forum, a facebook group which new and returning students can join and use to find housemates.

Are Ye Well?
At this time of year it’s easy to feel the pressure of exams, deadlines and late nights in the library.

So, we’ve organised a Guide Dogs & Chill Day plus free cuppas in the library to help you de-stress!

Wash Your Mouth Out
The words you use can really impact others. We use words and phrases every day without thinking about their true meaning and the effect they can have on others.

The Wash Your Mouth Out campaign focuses on the power of our words and asks everyone to consider the language they use.

Sexy Time
Let’s talk about sex. We want to bust some myths about sex and assure you that it’s ok to not have sex when you’re at university just as much as it’s ok to be having lots of fun, safe, consensual sex! We'll be running a series of workshops, fun events, giveaways and info stalls to answer all your questions you may ever have had about sex.

Bogs For All
We know we need to reflect the gender diversity we have on campus. Currently Queen's toilets are largely designated as ‘male’ or ‘female’. This excludes people who do not conform to the gender binary of male or female. ‘Gender Neutral’ toilets create a more inclusive, welcoming and safe environment for everyone so we have launched our Gender Neutral Toilets Campaign - Bogs for All!

Are Ye Well?
At this time of year it’s easy to feel the pressure of exams, deadlines and late nights in the library.

So, we’ve organised a number of events and classes to help you de-stress, including free tea and coffee in the library, self defence classes and even a guide dog experience!

Get Educated
Sometimes serious things happen in your personal life, or in the lives of those close to you, which have a very significant impact on your ability to study or sit exams. We want to help you 'Get Educated' about the rules and regulations which are there to support and protect you if you experience challenging personal circumstances.

Disability Awareness Week
Over 2,000 of our students have registered themselves as having a disability. We are running a Disability Awareness Week from 30 – 4 Dec to raise awareness about disability, offer activities to help make Queen’s a more welcoming place and give an opportunity for those students with disabilities to voice their opinion on how things in the University could improve for the better.

Checking Landlords Out
We know that some of our students are living in houses which haven’t been registered to the Landlord Registration Scheme. This could mean that these houses don’t meet the necessary requirements that must be met by a rental property. We want to encourage those landlords who haven’t already registered to sign their properties up as soon as possible.

Campaign SU

Queen’s Students have made a huge impact in the past and we are committed to encouraging this student activism. The Campaign SU programme will give you the knowledge and power to start campaigning on the changes that you want to make happen!

Think Out Loud
Research from the National Union of Students (NUS) shows that 20% of students experience mental health difficulties while at university. We want to let our students’ know that they are not alone and that there is support out there if they need it. Think Out Loud is a week of events dedicated to raising awareness of mental health issues.

QUBforLOVE
Northern Ireland is currently the only place in the UK and Ireland that has not legalised same-sex marriage. Yet a recent opinion poll showed that 68% of people in Northern Ireland back a change in the law to allow same-sex couples to marry. We believe that politicians can’t simply ignore this  -  join us in showing your support for marriage equality

Pop-Up SU

We're here to help you have an amazing time at Queen’s.

We’ve so much to offer you and we want as many of you to know as possible! So we’re heading out and about campus to bring the Union right to your doorstep.

Can't Donate. Nominate.
Donating blood saves lives. Here in Northern Ireland we need 200 new donors every week to keep up with demand. The Northern Ireland Executive has banned gay and bisexual men (MSM – Men who have Sex with Men) or women who have had sex with MSM from donating blood. We want to challenge this inequality and we are asking you to help.

QUBSU Accommodation Forum
We know that it is often hard to find other Queen's students to live with in the new term, especially if you are a new student coming to Queen's.

So, we've launched QUBSU Accommodation Forum, a facebook group which new and returning students can join and use to find housemates.

Storehouse
We care about the welfare of each and every one of our students so we have partnered up with Storehouse to help those students in need.

Storehouse is a local charity which provides emergency food parcels, clothing and furniture free of charge to individuals and families in Belfast.

Are Ye Well?

Are Ye Well? is your Union’s welfare campaign. It has been set up to help make it easy for students to get the advice they need, when they need it most.

We're in the McClay Mon 18 - Thurs 21 and Mon 25 - Thurs 28 May from 10pm - 12 midnight. See you then for a cuppa, snack and a chat!

Voting Registration

Lots of students are missing from the electoral register which means they don’t get a say in how things are run.

We want to encourage as many of our students as possible to register to vote by the 20 April deadline.

Stop DEL Cuts

We want the NI Assembly to reconsider the proposed 10.8% cut to the funding for The Deployment for Employment and Learning.

This cut will have a huge impact - tuition fees could rise, subjects and schools may close, and student places will be reduced. We want to campaign to  make sure that current and prospective students aren't affected.

Pop-Up SU

We're here to help you have an amazing time at Queen’s.

We’ve so much to offer you and we want as many of you to know as possible! So we’re heading out and about campus to bring the Union right to your doorstep.

Hey Neighbour

We know that relations between those students who live in the South Belfast community and their neighbours can sometimes be tense.

This can negatively affect your time at University and because your Union is here to help you have an amazing time at Queen’s, we want to change this.

Are Ye Well?
At this time of year it’s easy to feel the pressure of exams, deadlines and late nights in the library. So, we’ve organised lots of events 23 April -10 May - From Massage, Music Mood Rooms, Garden Games, Cuppas in the McClay Library, to Coffee Mornings in the Graduate School, we've got it covered!

Choice & Consent Week
Our Project Choice Ambassadors and SWAG members have been busy all year working on choice and consent. We're now bringing you this exciting new campaign which is much needed ahead of the upcoming referendum on repealing the 8th amendment and after the crucial Consent is Bae Workshops and SCORE survey results on non-consensual sexual experiences for students at Queen’s.

Support The Strike
The University and College Union (which many of Queen’s academic staff are a part of) is taking part in a 13 day strike. This is due to proposed changes to the pension scheme that many academic members of staff are a part of. We support the strike and are proud to stand in solidarity with our staff members who are affected. In light of this, we're encouraging students to Support The Strike!

Student Officer Surgeries
We're here to help you with any academic issues you have at Queen's. Are you having any issues or concerns about: the new academic year; tuition fees; grants and support funding; teaching and assessment; hidden course costs; and feedback on your academic work. We'll be out and about campus from 29 Jan - 1 Feb. There's no appointment needed - just pop by!

Know the Score
We're running a drugs & alcohol awareness campaign so that you have all the information you need to make your own informed decisions. It will explain the different types of drugs, their effects, the long and short term consequences of drug misuse and harm reduction.

International Buddy Scheme - Semester 2
We know how hard it must be for our International Students to leave their family, friends and home country to come to a completely new place – one where they mightn’t have even visited before or know anyone. We want to make our International Students feel as welcomed, as at home and as settled as possible in their new community at Queen’s!

Think out Loud - Mental Health Awareness Week
We want to raise awareness of mental health amongst students and we want those who are experiencing mental health issues to know that there is support out there if they need it. During #Thinkoutloud we will be running a series of events to showcase how you can look after your mental health as well as working towards ending the stigma around talking about mental health issues.

Beyond the Binaries – QUBSU Trans’ Students’ Week
Many people are confused with the differences in gender identity and sexual orientation and it is imperative that people become aware of the differences within the LGBT+ community and that trans, non-binary and intersex people have safe spaces to come together to discuss their experiences, expand their skills, and to have some fun!

Project Choice
The abortion law in Northern Ireland (NI) is the most restrictive in Europe. The NI Assembly has voted against reform to the 1861 Offences Against the Person Act, to allow lawful access to abortion, in cases of fatal foetal abnormality and sexual crime, or to extend the 1967 Abortion Act, that is applicable in the rest of the UK. Change is needed to give everyone full bodily autonomy. Get involved!

International Buddy Scheme - Semester 1
We know how hard it must be for our International Students to leave their family, friends and home country to come to a completely new place – one where they mightn’t have even visited before or know anyone. We want to make our International Students feel as welcomed, as at home and as settled as possible in their new community at Queen’s!

BAME Ambassadors
At Queen’s we’re incredibly proud of how diverse our student body is. Our Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) students represent an incredibly important part of this diversity on our campus, and it’s important that we continue to understand their needs and experiences.

QUBSU is proud to launch our LGBT+ History Month camapign and we'd love you to join us!

Across the UK LGBT+ History Month is a time to celebrate and reflect the contributions and achievements of the community to wider society, but also a time for allies to come together and practice solidarity in action, to mobilise against the attacks that LGBT+ people still face today.

This month we hope to bring together the LGBT+ community and allies in Queen’s, together to learn, celebrate and amplify queer voices in Queen’s and beyond. Light refreshments will be provided.

Beyond the Binaries – QUBSU Trans’ Students’ Week

It is essential that we empower trans and non-binary students and staff and that they know that they are valued in university and wider society.

Many people are also confused with the differences in gender identity and sexual orientation and it is imperative that people become aware of the differences within the LGBT+ community and that trans, non-binary and intersex people have safe spaces to come together to discuss their experiences, expand their skills and to have some fun!

Black History Month

Black History Month will platform the rich heritage and diverse backgrounds of the Black Community. As we grow into a rapidly diversifying community, it's imperative that we engage with our Afro-Caribbean communities on campus and beyond! We hope to see you at one of our events celebrating the work of our Black students and staff on campus.

Pledge Against Sexual Harassment

We want to see a society free of sexual harassment.

So many types of behaviours have become trivialised and normalised in our society, like: jokes; innuendos; catcalling; inappropriate comments; unsolicited pictures; and groping.

But these behaviours are not okay, they are forms of sexual harassment and they have no place on our campus or in our society.

We all have a part to play in making this better.
