National Student Money Week

11 February 13

This week is National Student Money Week (NSMW) which encourages students to think about finances, managing money effectively, securing adequate funding, identifying where to go to for support, and aims to help reduce the numbers falling into debt.

11-15 February 2013

To mark NSMW, Queen’s Students’ Union Advice Centre has invited representatives from a number of organisations to provide students with information on all things money related at their Money Week Money Market, Students’ Union Foyer, 12 February 2013, from 11am to 3pm.

Students’ Union Advice Centre - Staff will be available to answer any questions you may have, and also will be sharing some great money saving and budgeting ideas.

Student Finance NI - Representatives will be there to answer any queries about renewing your application for tuition fee loans, maintenance loans and maintenance grants for the 2013/14 academic year.

TV Licensing - Does my parents TV licence cover me?  Do I need a licence for my room in Halls?  How can I get a refund for the summer when I go back home?  How do I get a licence?

TV Licensing will be on hand to answer all these questions and more – they are nice people - really!

HM Revenue & Customs - Tax matters can be confusing, especially if you have a couple of part time jobs or are in and out of work.  Revenue and Customs can answer any questions you may have about paying tax, tax allowances, working in the holidays, claiming a tax refund, getting paid a minimum wage or applying for tax credits.

The Consumer Council - The Consumer Council has a responsibility to educate consumers on their rights and responsibilities and to equip them with the skills they need to make good decisions about their money.  The Council will be distributing information leaflets and can give advice on many consumer issues.

Student Guidance Support Fund - The Support Fund is used to provide discretionary financial help for students who get into financial difficulty during their course.  If you are struggling to make ends meet, come along to the Money Market to pick up an application from and get advice on making an application.

During National Student Money Week 2013 the National Association of Student Money Advisers (NASMA) are seeking input from students to assist future campaigns on student funding matters.  We would be really grateful if you could take two minutes to complete the following survey into student money issues by clicking here.
