Inspiring Leaders

11 December 14

On 5 and 6 November, 38 students took part in an all-expenses paid residential to the Templeton Hotel, Templepatrick as part of the ‘Inspiring Leaders’ programme.

Delivered by the William J. Clinton Leadership Institute, the programme saw these student volunteers in positions of leadership, embark on an intensive and rewarding two-day leadership programme.

The programme focussed on areas such as ‘Why Leadership Matters’, ‘Individual Leadership Styles’, and ‘How to Effectively Lead Others’, and concluded with a Careers, Employability & Skills module aiming to help the participants translate their volunteering efforts into the skills desired by employers.

Robert Stewart, second year Biological Sciences student, has various positions of leadership. He serves as: Vice-President of QUB Aikido Society; Health & Safety Co-Ordinator of mental health Society Give My Head Peace; Clubs & Society Co-Ordinator of RAG; and School Rep for Biological Sciences.

Robert stated that he thought the programme was engaging and exciting, and that he particularly enjoyed the emphasis placed on the qualities needed to be a successful leader such as integration, flexibility, and communication.

Through the programme, Robert re-evaluated himself as a leader and reflected upon his experiences to date. He explained that the employability module was as insightful as it highlighted all the transferrable skills volunteers often possess and how to correctly position them to employers.

The ‘Inspiring Leaders’ programme will return in Semester 2 - if you’re a volunteer in a position of leadership* and you would like to take part in the programme, please find further info here.
