May Ball
Celebrating Student Enterprise at Queen's University Belfast
The May Ball is a glittering black tie event, taking place in the spectacular Great Hall at Queen's. The event provides Enterprise SU with the opportunity to showcase and award our entrepreneurial students and to thank our support networks, both within Queen's and externally.
During the event, the following categories will be awarded:
- Student Entrepreneur of the Year
- Enterprise Educator of the Year
- Rising Star
- Enterprise Champion
- People's Choice
- Innovateher of the Year
We offer local businesses, organisations and departments the opportunity to be involved in this celebratory event through availing of a sponsorship package.
Our 2019 sponsors were: First Trust Bank, Free'ist, Tughans, School of EEEC's, Queen's Management School and Queen's Graduates' Association.
Last year we raised £1.6K for our event charity partner The Children's Heartbeat Trust. This year we are supporting QUB RAG in an effort to raise money for their four partnership charities: SOS Bus NI, Nexus, MS Society and Brain Injury Matters.

Student Entrepreneur of the Year
This award will be given to an individual student from Queen’s University Belfast to recognise their entrepreneurial achievements. Nominations for this category must outline how the nominee has demonstrated success in the creation or ongoing management of a student led venture. Nominees must show competence in the demonstration of an entrepreneurial mind-set, applying creativity and innovation to their venture. Ventures can include new or existing businesses, profit making activities, not-for-profit projects or social enterprises. Nominations should provide evidence of the above, with an emphasis on projects delivered since 2019. £500 prize money will be given to the recipient of this award.
- Enterprise Educator of the Year
This award will be given to member of staff from Queen’s University Belfast who has supported and championed the teaching of enterprise. Nominations should outline how the nominee has encouraged and supported students to be entrepreneurial either within their field of study, or through the uptake of extra-curricular activities. Nominations should give examples of how the nominee has inspired an entrepreneurial mind-set and creative approach amongst their students.
- Rising Star
This award will be given to a student from Queen’s University Belfast who, despite being at the early stages of entrepreneurship, shows significant potential for future impact. Nominations should outline the nominee’s entrepreneurial skill set such as leadership, creativity and ambition. Those nominated should be currently working on, or have started working on, an innovative business idea or start-up.
- Enterprise Champion
This award will be given to a student from Queen’s University Belfast who has shown a willingness to donate their time and efforts to the work of Enterprise SU. Those nominated should present evidence of being involved in a range of entrepreneurial activity and have acted as a role model for aspiring student entrepreneurs.
- People's Choice
This award will be given to a student from Queen’s University Belfast who successfully delivers a 90 second pitch, gaining the support and votes of the audience during the May Ball. Nominations should outline the business name, idea and why the nominee is deserving of an opportunity to pitch their business idea at the event. £250 prize money will be given to the recipient of this award.

Innovateher of the Year
This award will be given to a student from Queen’s University Belfast who successfully completed the Innovateher programme run by Enterprise SU. The nominated student should demonstrate how they have shown a willingness to learn about entrepreneurship through their programme attendance, participation and engagement. The nominee must have assisted in the creation of a business idea, pitched their idea to a panel of judges and inspired their fellow students through their individual and group contributions. £300 will be given to the recipient of this award.
